WHO IS AMELIA EARHART?
ADVENTURER, AUTHOR, AND RECORD-BREAKING PILOT
AMELIA EARHART
July 24th is National Amelia Earhart Day, honoring her birthday and her tremendous achievements as an adventurer, author, and record-breaking pilot!
I could not imagine a better way to celebrate this Power Woman AND introduce a curation of jewels inspired by an avian theme: Meet the Feathers!
Amelia became the first woman to fly SOLO across the Atlantic on May 20th, 1932 (among many other records). She then set out to become the first woman to fly around the world on June 1, 1937. Just over a month later and short of the remaining 7,000 miles, her plane disappeared in transit to Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean.
Among her other accomplishments, Amelia served as the first president of The Ninety Nines Inc (an awesome sisterhood of pilots), was an early champion of the Equal Rights Amendment, and became a visiting aeronautical engineering advisor at Purdue University as well as providing career counseling for women students.
AMELIA’S LETTER TO THE NEW YORK TIMES
Don’t call me “Mrs.”!
Another reason why Amelia Earhart is such an awesome Power Woman is because she eloquently requested of the New York Times that they call her by HER full name - not her husband's name.
Below is her letter…
Dear Mr. Sulzberger:
May I make a request of the Times through you? Despite the mild expression of my wishes, and those of G.P.P, I am constantly referred to as “Mrs. Putnam” when the Times mentions me in its columns.
I admit I have no principle to uphold in asking that I be called by my professional name in print. However, it is for many reasons more convenient for both of us to be simply “Amelia Earhart”. After all (here may be a principle) I believe flyers should be permitted the same privileges as writers or actresses.
I have written Mrs. Sulzberger to thank her for sending me the lovely orchids, and here are my thanks to you. It was pleasant, indeed to be so remembered.
Sincerely yours,
Amelia Earhart
