Because color is a good idea right now, I bring you The Skinny on Tourmaline.
The name “tourmaline” comes from “toramalli” - a Sri Lankan word meaning “mixed colored stones”.
Tourmaline was brought to Europe 400 years ago via the Dutch East India Company. Some gems were mistaken as rubies or emeralds and it wasn’t until the 1800’s that scientists realized it's a distinctly different mineral species!
Personally, I'm drawn to tourmaline and now I know why - they literally have magnetism!
The cool science behind this is that they have high iron and/or manganese concentrations. Under pressure, Tourmaline can be electrically charged - a phenomenon called piezoelectricity. It's also pyroelectric, meaning it can generate a temporary voltage when heated or cooled. When heated, tourmaline will magnetically attract small particles such as dust or ashes.
It also has the distinction of exhibiting one of the widest variety of colors in the entire gem kingdom!
